Stephen William Hawking – born on 8 January 1942 is an English cosmologist, theoretical physicist, author and Director of Research at the Center for Theoretical Cosmology in the University of Cambridge. In spite of his suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a state of unresponsive nervous system, Stephen William Hawking is well known for his work about black holes and for authoring several popular science books.

Before his diagnosis, he was never interested in studies. He was bored with life and nothing worth doing. A couple of incidents kept him from being totally discouraged off his disease. First when he observed a patient suffering from leukemia, with whom Stephen William Hawking shared the room in hospital. Observing him, he felt “my suffering is almost better than his condition.” After being discharged from the hospital, from a dream he discovered that there is still to be done with his life.

Above all these incidents, there was one strong reason that kept Stephen William Hawking moving was the fact that he was in love with young Jane Wilde, just before the disease was diagnosed. They got married in 1965. And since then he has put in all his efforts into his work and research.

Helen Adams Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, on June 27, 1880. Helen was born a normal child. She learned speaking when she was six months old. By the age of one year, she learned to communicate with her parents and she had also started to walk. At the age of eighteen months, Helen developed an illness that the doctor identified as brain fever. It took few days for the fever to leave her but had put in a permanent mark of its depraved visit.  Since then Helen was never able to hear and see. She became deaf and blind for life. Helen did not lose her heart there and developed her own signals to communicate with her parents as and when required. She perceived the importance of communication.

The union of two strong-minded women

At the age of six, her parents sought an advice from Alexander Graham Bell, in regards of Helen’s condition. He advised them to contact Perkins Institute for the Blind. Here they were introduced to a strong minded 21 year old lady Annie Sullivan, who had sight limitations of her own. Annie Sullivan took up the challenge to help Helen Keller lead a productive life. Annie Sullivan started her inspiring journey with Helen Keller and one month after her arrival, she taught Helen Keller the first word “water”, by using her fingers to spell letter-by-letter into Helen Keller’s hand. This process opened an entirely new world of learning for Helen Keller. Within a span of three years, Helen Keller learned the manual alphabets and Braille alphabets. She learned to read and write.

Helen Keller’s Education

Helen Keller’s continuous and unbiased focus to learn helped her improve her communication, learn different languages and finally was able to complete her graduation with honors. All through her education, she was assisted by her highly determined mentor, Annie Sullivan. Annie used to interpret the books and spell then on her hand. Helen then translated the notes into Braille. They had a very hard time but never got disheartened. She wrote her first book – “The Story of My Life”, when she was still in the college. Then she went on to write another 11 books in her life.

Annie was so determined to help Helen that she married John Macy on the condition that, Helen should move with them to their house. She even separated with Macy to make herself available for Helen all through.

Annie used to interpret the speeches of Helen for the audience in all their tours. Annie Sullivan has dedicated her life to Helen as her mentor, till her death at the age of 70.

As a young woman Helen Keller has put in her life for the lives of others. Others, who were blind and deaf like her. She along with Annie Sullivan travelled around 40 countries, presenting lectures that enlightens people through her work. She encouraged the disabled to be strong, courageous and determined to make their lives rich, productive, and beautiful for others and for themselves.
